Ocado broadens its reusable packaging scheme with new products, encouraging customers to reduce single-use plastic through returnable containers.

Ocado Expands Reusable Packaging Program to Reduce Single-Use Plastic

Ocado has expanded its online reusable packaging initiative by adding new SKUs, including Ocado Reuse Non-Bio Liquid Detergent and Clear Skies Fabric Conditioner. This program, first launched in August, aims to replace single-use plastics with sustainable, reusable containers. Customers can now choose select laundry and pantry staples in refillable vessels that are returned during their next Ocado delivery for cleaning and reuse.

This system, managed by GoUnpackaged, involves hygienic washing and refilling of containers, each designed for over 60 reuses. Existing SKUs, such as reusable basmati rice and penne pasta, have already proven popular among eco-conscious shoppers, and Ocado reports a steady increase in return rates. With this expansion, Ocado aims to offer practical, scalable solutions to reduce single-use plastic waste.

Nearly three-quarters of surveyed consumers expressed concern about single-use waste, underscoring the demand for refillable options across essential items.

This initiative reflects the growing trend in the grocery sector to adopt circular packaging systems, as more consumers advocate for sustainable practices. Ocado’s approach aligns with the UK’s ambitious targets to minimize plastic waste, offering a practical alternative that could inspire broader industry adoption.

  • Environmental Impact: Each reusable container offsets up to five single-use plastic items, significantly reducing waste.
  • High Return Rates: Weekly vessel returns are rising, showing consumer commitment to the program.
  • Increased Consumer Demand: Studies indicate strong interest in refillable solutions, particularly for essential items.

Ocado’s expanded program demonstrates a viable path for retailers seeking to transition to sustainable packaging. As the program gains momentum, it could inspire other retailers to explore similar initiatives, marking a shift toward a circular economy in grocery retail.
