Slovakia’s PD Dumbier reduces plastic usage by 80% by switching from PET bottles to Elopak’s Pure-Pak cartons, advancing sustainability in dairy packaging.

PD Dumbier Cuts Plastic Use by 80% with Switch to Elopak Pure-Pak Cartons

PD Dumbier, a leading Slovak dairy producer, has made a significant stride toward sustainability by replacing its traditional PET bottles with Elopak’s Pure-Pak® cartons, achieving an 80% reduction in plastic usage. This packaging transformation not only aligns with EU environmental goals but also sets a compelling precedent for other beverage manufacturers in Central and Eastern Europe.

The decision to switch was driven by PD Dumbier’s strategic objective to minimize environmental impact while maintaining the integrity and shelf life of its dairy products. Pure-Pak® cartons, made primarily from renewable paperboard sourced from responsibly managed forests, offer a recyclable and low-carbon alternative to single-use plastics.

According to Elopak, the changeover will eliminate nearly 10 tonnes of plastic packaging annually from PD Dumbier’s operations. This represents a critical move in the broader effort to reduce packaging waste and carbon emissions across the food and beverage sector.

“Our partnership with Elopak reflects our commitment to sustainable farming and responsible production,” said Ľuboš Záhon, CEO of PD Dumbier. “The Pure-Pak carton not only protects product quality but also reflects our values in every liter we sell.”

The Pure-Pak® carton selected for this transition features Elopak’s Natural Brown Board—a renewable and unbleached board that provides a rustic, authentic appearance while significantly reducing the energy and chemicals used in production. These cartons are fully recyclable and designed to fit seamlessly into existing paper recycling streams.

As consumer preferences shift toward eco-conscious products, PD Dumbier’s initiative positions the company as a pioneer in Slovakia’s dairy market. Research consistently shows that packaging sustainability plays a growing role in purchase decisions, especially among younger consumers.

Key benefits of the switch include:

  • 80% reduction in plastic use per unit
  • Improved recyclability with standard paper waste
  • Enhanced brand alignment with sustainable values
  • Lower carbon footprint per product
  • Positive consumer response to renewable packaging

The cartons are already in use across PD Dumbier’s range of milk products, and early feedback indicates strong customer approval, with many praising the new design and environmental benefits. This move is part of a broader trend of cartonization in the dairy industry, where liquid dairy and plant-based beverages are moving away from rigid plastics to flexible, fibre-based formats.

For Elopak, the partnership with PD Dumbier underscores the growing demand for low-impact, circular packaging solutions in regional markets often underserved by sustainable innovation. It also reinforces the company’s commitment to delivering scalable alternatives that help clients meet their climate and waste-reduction targets.

As the EU continues to tighten regulations around single-use plastics and recyclability, proactive steps like these are likely to gain momentum. PD Dumbier’s example highlights how even small to mid-sized dairy producers can drive meaningful environmental change through smart packaging choices.
