UK retailer Selfridges expands its in-store packaging recycling scheme to all Beauty Halls, encouraging customers to return hard-to-recycle cosmetic and fragrance packaging.

Selfridges launches packaging recycling scheme across all Beauty Halls

Selfridges has expanded its commitment to circular retail by launching the ‘Reselfridges Recycle’ packaging take-back scheme across all of its UK Beauty Halls, including flagship locations in London Oxford Street, Birmingham and Manchester.

The initiative allows customers to return a wide range of cosmetic and fragrance packaging, including items that are typically excluded from household kerbside recycling schemes. These include mixed-material components such as pumps, caps, mirrored glass and composite packaging formats. Aerosols and clinical or medical waste are excluded to ensure safe handling and processing.

All collected materials are managed by recycling specialist MYGroup, which operates advanced sorting and processing systems designed specifically for post-consumer beauty waste. Residual cosmetic products and fragrances are separated and treated before being converted into biofuel, while packaging components such as glass and plastics are processed and recycled into new raw materials.

To encourage customer participation, the scheme is integrated into the Selfridges Unlocked loyalty programme. Each return earns customers a digital ‘key’, which can be redeemed for rewards including complimentary services, access to exclusive experiences, prize draws and promotional events. This incentive-based approach is designed to embed sustainable behaviour into everyday shopping habits.

The nationwide rollout follows a pilot phase at Selfridges’ Manchester Beauty Hall between September and November 2025. During this trial, the number of loyalty keys collected by customers almost quadrupled, demonstrating strong consumer engagement and highlighting growing demand for accessible recycling solutions within the beauty retail environment.

Selfridges joins a growing number of UK retailers addressing the environmental impact of beauty packaging, alongside department stores, pharmacies and online beauty platforms already working with MYGroup. The expansion reflects a broader industry shift toward take-back schemes as a practical response to the challenges posed by complex packaging designs.

According to industry data, only a small proportion of beauty packaging placed on the UK market is currently recycled, largely due to the prevalence of mixed materials and contamination from leftover product. Traditional recycling infrastructure often lacks the capability to process these formats effectively.

By implementing in-store collection points and partnering with specialised recycling providers, Selfridges aims to close this gap, supporting higher recovery rates while reinforcing its wider sustainability strategy. The initiative forms part of the retailer’s long-term ambition to reduce waste, support circular material flows and encourage customers to actively participate in more sustainable consumption models.
