Sharpak and WB Chambers introduce SharpTek Technology, a padless, fully recyclable berry packaging that reduces weight by 17%, enhancing sustainability in the produce industry.
In a significant advancement for sustainable packaging, Sharpak has collaborated with UK-based berry grower WB Chambers to introduce an innovative padless technology for berry packaging. This development reduces packaging weight by 17% and ensures full recyclability through kerbside collection, aligning with both companies' commitment to environmental stewardship and the promotion of a circular economy.
The newly launched SharpTek Technology eliminates the need for glued absorbent pads, thereby removing hundreds of tonnes of packaging waste from the supply chain. By utilizing a highly recyclable mono-material PET, SharpTek creates a soft base that protects the berries while maintaining product integrity. This design effectively separates juices from the fruit, enhancing quality and reducing food waste.
Ben Norman, Commercial Manager at WB Chambers, expressed enthusiasm for the project, highlighting its alignment with sustainability objectives and the ability to maintain production efficiency without compromising fruit quality. The collaboration between Sharpak and WB Chambers exemplifies how cooperative efforts can yield significant environmental and consumer benefits.
SharpTek's innovative design has garnered industry recognition, receiving two bronze awards at The Grocer New Product & Packaging Awards 2024. This accolade underscores the technology's potential to meet retailer goals of reducing packaging while ensuring product integrity.
Berry punnets equipped with SharpTek technology are now available at major retailers, offering consumers a recyclable packaging solution that simplifies the recycling process. Produced at Sharpak's Aylesham site, which boasts a BRCGS AA+ rating, SharpTek represents a step forward in sustainable packaging solutions for the fresh produce industry.
This initiative reflects a broader trend within the packaging industry, where companies are increasingly prioritizing eco-friendly solutions. By introducing SharpTek, Sharpak and WB Chambers not only address regulatory demands but also respond to growing consumer expectations for sustainable packaging options.
