Small packaging changes at SKU level in the wine industry, such as plant-based closures, can lead to significant reductions in plastic waste. When scaled across UK supermarkets, it has the potential to save thousands of tonnes of plastic annually.

How a Single Packaging Change Can Remove Tonnes of Plastic from the Wine Supply Chain

Packaging innovation has emerged as a powerful tool for sustainability in the wine industry, with new data revealing how even small changes at the SKU level can lead to significant reductions in plastic use. According to analysis by French cooperative Tutiac, switching to more sustainable closures and plant-based, recyclable capsules on just one wine SKU can prevent substantial amounts of plastic from entering the environment. When scaled across a typical UK supermarket's range of 700 wine SKUs, the impact becomes truly substantial.

Tutiac’s data shows that changing the closure on a single SKU can save up to 2.86 tonnes of plastic annually. When applied across an entire supermarket's wine range, this could remove more than 2,000 tonnes of plastic per year — roughly equivalent to the weight of 100 double-decker buses or 100 million plastic bottles. This shift can contribute significantly to reducing the carbon footprint of the wine industry, showcasing the importance of scaling small packaging changes.

Romain Thomas of Vinventions, which provides the closure technology, emphasized the potential of such small shifts, saying: 'What’s powerful is that this impact scales effortlessly. If more wineries adopt the solution, millions of bottles can literally become part of cleaning our oceans.' This presents an opportunity not only for environmental benefit but also for wineries to create new stories around sustainability, shifting the narrative from just the wine inside the bottle to the positive impact of the bottle itself.

The UK’s retail landscape offers a clear advantage in scaling sustainability efforts, as large supermarkets can implement such packaging changes across high volumes. By incorporating recyclable closures and plant-based materials across entire portfolios, supermarkets can multiply the environmental impact without requiring consumer behavior changes. This approach allows sustainability initiatives to be embedded into existing business models and can bring about tangible, measurable environmental benefits.

Large-scale producers, especially cooperatives like Tutiac, play a key role in this transformation. Tutiac represents around 500 winegrowing families, and through its collective efforts, it can invest in the technology, research, and certifications necessary to drive sustainability forward. Modern cooperatives are now recognized not only for their volume but for their commitment to quality and sustainability. Tutiac’s shift to more sustainable packaging solutions is just one example of how cooperatives are driving innovation and environmental progress in the wine industry.

The key takeaway for the wine sector is that meaningful sustainability progress doesn’t always require radical changes. Rather, it can be achieved by applying proven solutions consistently at scale. By implementing these sustainable packaging changes, the industry can significantly reduce its plastic waste and make a measurable impact on the environment.
