Home care brand Smol transitions to durable, refillable aluminium packaging, cutting plastic waste and promoting circularity.
Smol, a UK-based home care brand, is transforming its packaging model with the launch of durable aluminium 'bottles for life'. The company is replacing its familiar recycled plastic containers with 500 ml aluminium bottles across key products such as washing liquid, stain gel, fabric conditioner, and cleaning sprays. These bottles come equipped with pumps and triggers made from recycled plastic, combining functionality with sustainability.
The shift marks a major step in Smol’s broader sustainability strategy, aligning with the company’s existing refill system and supporting circular packaging goals. Aluminium was chosen for its durability, recyclability, and environmental benefits. Compared to virgin aluminium, recycled aluminium uses 95% less energy to produce, and it requires 90% less energy than recycled glass. This dramatically reduces carbon emissions across the product’s lifecycle.
Smol highlights the circular narrative of the new packaging, stating the aluminium has "already done its job in many previous lives" and is now ready to serve customers again as a long-lasting, reusable bottle. The packaging is designed to be kept and reused, with refills delivered to customers' homes—eliminating the need for single-use plastics.
This move also coincides with a wider industry trend. Global brands such as Unilever and Ball Corporation have introduced aluminium-based innovations, including carbon-free smelting and 100% recyclable containers. In Europe, Swedish startup Meadow is scaling lightweight aluminium systems in collaboration with Polish partner Fillsy. At Cosmetic Business 2025 in Munich, aluminium-based solutions like Tubex’s MonoSense tube drew attention for their efficiency and design.
In addition to the new aluminium packaging, Smol launched four new colours for its foaming handwash collection—honey, pistachio, petal, and slate—bringing aesthetic variety to the sustainable format.
As consumer demand for environmentally responsible products continues to rise, Smol’s aluminium packaging exemplifies a market shift towards circular, low-impact design. It's more than a packaging change; it's a clear signal that sustainability and innovation can go hand-in-hand in the home care industry.
