Smurfit Kappa's invests €33M in sustainability: A Step Towards a Greener Future

Smurfit Kappa has made a significant commitment to sustainability by investing €33m in Spain, which will further reduce its carbon footprint and achieve its sustainability goals.

The company has unveiled a state-of-the-art photovoltaic system at its Sangüesa paper mill, which will generate more than 50% of its annual energy requirements. This system, consisting of over 12,000 solar panels, is the largest of its kind in the Navarra region and will reduce the mill's annual CO2 emissions by over 3,000 tonnes. "The photovoltaic system is a significant step towards reducing our carbon footprint and achieving our sustainability goals," notes Javier Rivas, COO, Smurfit Kappa Paper & Board Europe.

The second investment of €27m in its Nervión paper mill will see the mill adopt a fully circular production process. This project involves the biggest landfill reduction project Smurfit Kappa has undertaken to date, which will remove 75,000 tonnes of waste from landfill and eliminate approximately 450,000km per year in road transport. "These two projects are milestones for the Smurfit Kappa paper division and aligned with the EU Green Deal's transition to climate neutrality through increasing clean energy technologies," emphasizes Javier Rivas.

Garrett Quinn, Chief Sustainability Officer, Smurfit Kappa, added, "These two projects demonstrate the Group's continued investment to deliver on its sustainability goals with over €30 million in these two projects alone, delivering reduced emissions, and increasing the circularity of our production process."

By investing in these sustainable projects, Smurfit Kappa is demonstrating its commitment to reducing its environmental impact and achieving its sustainability goals. The company's efforts are a step towards a greener future and an example for other companies to follow.
