Smurfit Kappa's Sustainable Bee Transport Solution for Biobest

Smurfit Kappa has developed an eco-friendly packaging solution for Biobest, a global leader in biological crop protection and pollination.

Biobest's journey began in 1987 when veterinarian Roland De Jonghe started breeding bumble bees in his garage, pioneering organic tomato pollination. Recognizing the advantages of bumble bees over chemical pesticides, the company thrived.

Approaching Smurfit Kappa for a sustainable alternative to the EPS pack used for live bumble bee transport, Biobest sought an insulated, weather-resistant, and robust solution for outdoor pollination of fruits and vegetables.

Smurfit Kappa turned to its Better Planet Packaging portfolio, crafting a solution from water-resistant AquaStop paper with hexacomb fitments to protect and insulate the insects. Rigorous tests confirmed the pack's ability to endure 6-8 weeks outdoors, ensuring the safety of the bees for effective pollination.

Peter van Leent, Sustainability Manager at Biobest, stated, "Sustainability is a core value for us, and Smurfit Kappa fully understood the brief. We aim to replace Styrofoam with fully recyclable solutions and look forward to expanding its use."

The AquaStop paper, known for water resistance without compromising recyclability, provides a sustainable solution.
