Steel for Packaging Europe marks its 40th anniversary with the launch of a new recycling status report, outlining challenges, opportunities, and policy recommendations to strengthen circular steel packaging in Europe.

Steel for Packaging Europe Marks 40th Anniversary with New Recycling Status Report

Steel for Packaging Europe is marking its 40th anniversary with a comprehensive programme of activities, highlighted by the upcoming publication of a new steel packaging recycling status report. The report will examine the current state of steel packaging recycling in Europe, identify key challenges, and outline future opportunities to keep steel packaging within a circular material loop for as long as possible.

The new publication builds on previous recycling status reports released in 2018 and 2022, which tracked developments in the European packaging market and evolving regulatory frameworks. Each edition has focused on improving both the quantity and quality of recycled steel packaging, supporting broader European circular economy ambitions.

Shaping Europe’s Circular Future

The anniversary report will be officially presented at a high-level conference titled “Shaping Europe’s Circular Future”, scheduled to take place in Brussels on 21 April. The event will bring together policymakers, industry stakeholders, recyclers, and value-chain partners to discuss the future of steel packaging recycling in Europe.

Discussions will focus on the implementation of the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) and the expected adoption of the Circular Economy Act. Key policy topics include accelerating circularity, introducing incentives for high-quality recycling, and further strengthening Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) systems to support efficient and resilient material flows.

Four Decades of Progress in Steel Packaging Recycling

Founded in 1986, Steel for Packaging Europe has accompanied significant structural changes within the European packaging and recycling landscape. Over the past four decades, the recycling rate for steel packaging in Europe has increased steadily, reflecting the material’s permanent recyclability and strong cooperation across the industry.

The association has played a key role in promoting improved collection, sorting, and recycling systems, ensuring that steel packaging remains a valuable and recoverable resource. Steel’s magnetic properties, infinite recyclability, and ability to be recycled without loss of quality make it a cornerstone material for a circular packaging economy.

Anniversary Initiatives and Future Commitments

As part of its anniversary celebrations, Steel for Packaging Europe has introduced a dedicated anniversary logo and launched a new section on its website highlighting key milestones in the development of steel packaging and recycling across Europe.

Looking ahead, the association reaffirmed its commitment to working closely with members, policymakers, and partners to support circular economy objectives, resilient recycling systems, and science-based policy frameworks. In an increasingly regulated packaging landscape, Steel for Packaging Europe aims to ensure that steel remains a model material for sustainability, recyclability, and long-term resource efficiency.

The 40th anniversary report is expected to serve as both a policy reference and a strategic roadmap for strengthening steel packaging recycling in Europe over the coming decade.
