Stora Enso's Sustainable Initiatives: 2023 Highlights

Biodiverse nature and climate-friendly wood supply are the cornerstones of Stora Enso's sustainable business approach, extending from forests to final products. As part of its comprehensive sustainability goals, Stora Enso is dedicated to reducing its greenhouse gas emissions by 50% by 2030. Additionally, the company is committed to achieving a net positive impact on biodiversity by enhancing the diversity of species, habitats, and landscapes.

Exploring specific actions taken by Stora Enso in 2023 in Finland and Sweden provides insight into the company's commitment to sustainability. In Finland, Stora Enso has undertaken wetland restoration, aiming to restore 1,000 hectares of peatland by 2027 in collaboration with Tornator. Presently, 600 hectares are in various stages of restoration, showcasing progress towards the target. In Sweden, a new project focuses on restoring wetlands on the company's forest land, with careful site selection and partnerships established in 2023, paving the way for more targeted restoration plans in 2024.

Stora Enso introduced a pioneering biodiversity premium for forest owners in Finland, incentivizing actions that contribute to enhanced biodiversity. This initiative is an integral part of Stora Enso's biodiversity action program in the region. Additionally, the company resumed floating pulp wood transport in Finland after a 14-year hiatus, utilizing bundles to reduce carbon emissions significantly compared to other modes of transport.

Addressing the need for mixed forests, Stora Enso implemented measures in Finland by reducing spruce density, fostering mixed-species forests. The company plans to introduce a new spruce planting model for forest service contracts from spring 2025 onwards. In Sweden, controlled burnings on Stora Enso's forest land contribute to habitat promotion for species dependent on or preferring forest fires, aligning with the company's biodiversity goals.

Collaborating with Tornator and WWF, Stora Enso continued its efforts to protect forest streams in Finland. Through joint initiatives, 30 spawning grounds for endangered trout were built, and extensive freshwater habitat restoration took place, involving nearly 90 volunteers across four locations.

Stora Enso's commitment to biodiversity extends to the protection of the endangered sand lizard in Sweden. A record-breaking 300+ sand lizard egg-laying pits were identified on the company's land in 2023, reflecting a remarkable 600% increase over two decades. This success signifies the positive impact of Stora Enso's ongoing protection measures, including habitat restoration in sandy heaths and dunes.
