Voith and Schumacher Packaging Successful PM 2 Reformation

Voith provides a comprehensive package for pulp preparation, paper machine, and winder, minimizing interfaces and risks for the customer. The reform will double the lightweight cardboard production capacity of PM 2 while increasing the factory's sustainability and efficiency.

MYSZKÓW, POLAND – Voith and Schumacher Packaging have successfully completed the start-up of PM 2 in Myszków, Poland. The reform modernized the entire production line, utilizing minimal existing machine components to ensure maximum sustainability and efficiency.

"We are excited about Voith's reform of our PM 2. Thanks to their complete supplier capabilities, Voith managed to minimize project interfaces, reducing reform risks," confirms Björn Schumacher, CEO of Schumacher Packaging Group.

The PM 2 reform will significantly increase the factory's lightweight cardboard production capacity. By focusing on sustainability, machine availability, and process efficiency, the reform prioritized three key areas according to the customer's request.

"With the reform, we doubled our production capacity to 1,000 tons per day. The project also reduced waste generation and the consumption of fibers, energy, and water. It's a great satisfaction to have a long-term partner like Voith, sharing the same ambitious sustainability goals and offering the right products in their portfolio," states Henryk Drechnowicz, General Manager of Schumacher Packaging in Myszków.

Voith had previously modernized the OCC pulp preparation line of the factory in 2018. To increase production capacity and maximize factory efficiency, the OCC line was upgraded with new technologies from Voith's BlueLine portfolio, BTG sensors, and Meri's water treatment systems.

"Schumacher Packaging found in Voith a long-term partner who shares its values. This resulted in a particularly productive cooperation between project teams," says Philip Schnellinger, Voith Paper's Process Technology Manager. "It is a pride to see that Voith, with its comprehensive complete supplier portfolio, met all requirements and led the project to achieve this significant milestone."

Innovative technologies ensure the best production quality. State-of-the-art machine concepts, including DuoFormer D, MasterJet Pro headbox, and DuoShake DG, provided increased strength and better quality to paper profiles. Other benefits include lower operating costs and faster, stable paper type changes.

The press section was revamped and equipped with Voith's NipcoFlex technology for twin-shoe presses. This solution's significant capacity increase raises the paper's dry content, reducing specific steam consumption in the drying section. To complete the extensive reform, Voith provided the proven technology of the fully automatic VariFlex NG winder. Equipped with the exclusive Gecko OneStep system, the winder allows sheet separation, as well as the start and end of gluing in a single step. Furthermore, the VariFlex NG ensures uniform winding at maximum speed thanks to integrated drive control and the innovative hydropneumatic SmoothRun damping system.
