Discover how Wayfair enhances packaging recyclability and pursues a zero waste goal through innovative initiatives, outlined in its 2023 ESG report.
Wayfair has made significant strides in enhancing packaging recyclability and setting ambitious sustainability goals, as outlined in its 2023 ESG report. The company aims to achieve a 90% waste diversion rate globally by 2030, building upon its 42% achievement in 2023.
"[T]ogether with our partners, we are introducing new processes and waste collection equipment to improve diversion rates and reduce costs," the report states.
Wayfair's white glove delivery service plays a pivotal role in waste reduction by facilitating the return of packaging materials to Wayfair facilities for recycling and disposal. Additionally, a pilot program focuses on recycling Styrofoam, addressing environmental concerns associated with packaging materials.
The company has increased the recyclability of its packaging materials to 90%, up from 82% in the previous year. This improvement is largely attributed to the expanded use of paper-based mailers in the U.S., featuring 100% recyclable content, and the adoption of paper-based, recyclable filler packaging in Germany and the UK.
"Our procurement team also includes requirements for recycled content and recyclability in their processes," notes the report. In 2023, Wayfair achieved a 34% recycled content in its globally procured paper-based packaging.
Despite a slight increase of 0.3% in scope 1 and 2 emissions in 2023, attributed to business growth, Wayfair remains committed to its 2035 goal of reducing these emissions by 63% from a 2020 baseline.
